Protect the Food While You Wait

• Keep the doors closed. A closed refrigerator stays cold for about 4 hours; a full freezer holds about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24, according to USDA guidance.
• Use ice and a cooler for milk, meat, fish and leftovers if the wait is long.
• Check with a thermometer. Perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be thrown away.
• Note what the display says before unplugging or resetting anything; the code helps the technician.

Leaving the Unit for the Season?

If your Miami Beach home sits empty part of the year, a few steps protect the appliances:

• Close the water supply to the refrigerator ice maker and dispenser.
• Turn off the ice maker so it does not keep calling for water.
• Leave the refrigerator running with a few items inside, or clean it, unplug it and prop the doors open to prevent mold.
• Ask the building or a neighbor to check for leaks and odors.
• Have a technician look at the condenser before you leave if the unit has been running hot.

Keep It From Happening Again

• Clean the refrigerator condenser coil two or three times a year; salt and lint build up faster near the ocean.
• Wipe door gaskets with mild soap and water, and replace seals that have hardened or torn.
• Keep wine cooler vents clear of cabinet trim and stored items.
• Use a surge protector where the manufacturer allows it, especially for wine coolers and smaller appliances.
• Run the kitchen exhaust while cooking to keep grease and moisture away from electronics.

Repair or Replace?

High-end built-in appliances in Miami Beach kitchens are usually worth repairing: they are designed to be serviced, and replacing a built-in often means custom cabinetwork and building approvals. A basic unit near the end of its life with a failed compressor or heavy corrosion may not be worth the repair. The technician will tell you honestly which case you are in.
